Choose a specimen and place it in the examination area!

Curiosity leads interaction with this tactile experience. The Specimen Explorer evolved from our love of blending physical interactions with digital content. Using a customizable  database, some custom electronics, and a little bit of magic, the Specimen Explorer encourages visitors to place a specimen in the examination area, then instantly displays information about that item on the built-in touchscreen. Specimens can be housed in acrylic cases, cast in resin, or left as-is. The latest version of the SE has been built to travel! Perfect for classroom visits or loaned exhibits.

The Specimen Explorer 2.0 is here!

We recently prototyped a completely standalone version of the specimen explorer that features a larger screen, a larger examination area, and a kiosk-style enclosure. Still easily moveable, this new, playful form factor allows us to use comparably priced (but larger and more easily replaced) hardware in a durable all-in-one kiosk. More space = more interesting objects = more magic.
