Earth Explorer

Complex science topics, made exciting and approachable.

Perch was tasked with organizing an extensive Earth Science curriculum into a cohesive and engaging user interface that supports school group sessions and everyday visitors alike.

After studying the content with stakeholders, we designed a powers-of-ten-style interface that allows users to explore concepts across three scales: global, regional, and local. Each level has an accompanying interactive illustration with topics tagged at appropriate locations. For example, the Hydrology topic is tagged on a stream at the local level, a cloud at the regional level, and the ocean at the global level.

Additionally, the Earth Explorer classifies topics under Earth Spheres, a standards-based categorization system familiar to teachers and students. The scales and spheres systems offer parallel methods of navigating content through a single interactive interface.
