Content-Aware Microscope

Explore the microscopic world of marine science.

This exhibit shines a literal and figurative light on the vital microscopic studies conducted by the Maine Department of Marine Resources, revealing how tiny phytoplankton underpin our entire marine food chain.

Our setup features a large-screen microscope paired with a rotating sample tray, creating a content-rich, immersive experience that mimics a marine laboratory setting. The custom-designed rotating tray and embedded sensor detect the active specimen when it is changed, automatically fetching and displaying relevant research content on the adjacent touchscreens.

Visitors can explore a range of specimens, from the smallest ocean creatures to stages of the lobster lifecycle, and engage with interactive, video-supported narratives. Aquarium staff can update specimens and content easily using a remote content management system, allowing them to incorporate DMR’s latest scientific endeavors.

As the tray is rotated, the nearby touchscreen automatically adjusts the content displayed to relate to the specimen on view.
