The folks at Penobscot East Resource Center are passionate about working to secure a sustainable future for fisheries and fishing communities in Eastern Maine and beyond. With the aim of further engaging the public in the important work that they do, PERC came to Perch with a great idea to create an immersive educational experience in their public space in Stonington, Maine. Phase one of this project, the Interactive Species Explorer allows viewers to examine common species found in the coastal waters of Maine and learn about their relationships with other species and with the communities that depend on them.
The installation is powered by two side-by-side touch-capable projectors and four iPads mounted to a pier-like table below. Touching a bobbing species on the wall pulls it into the examination zone, where a visitor can explore in-depth info about that species, including photos and videos. On the back end, Meteor was used to synchronize the 6 devices in real time and allow data to flow in both directions.
